Deva's upbringing was steeped in music, spirituality, and community. Her mother, a medieval music teacher, immersed her in chamber music, drum circles, and mantras, including the powerful Gayatri mantra. While she initially resisted her parents' influence, she was drawn to creating music through choir and orchestra. As she grew, her mother's discovery of Osho's teachings resonated with her.
At 17, Deva left school and joined Osho's ashram in India, where she delved into Zen theology and diverse artistic expressions of the Divine, including mantras and dances from various traditions. Her partner Miten's devotional songs found enthusiastic reception, and they traveled to Osho gatherings, with Deva initially singing backup.
A turning point came at an Osho music festival in England when Deva boldly joined in singing the Gayatri mantra. Her fear dissolved, and she embraced her own radiant light. Deva and Miten then began weaving original harmonies for ancient chants. Their first album, "The Essence," recorded in 1998, unexpectedly gained global popularity, introducing a new spiritual sound. This marked the birth of Deva Premal & Miten.
